Zerocash, Zcash’s academic precursor, credits Israeli government and U.S. defense research funding among its sponsors.

A 2019 disclosure described potentially undetectable, unlimited counterfeiting of shielded coins, with transaction privacy unaffected. The flaw was fixed in October 2018; the company reported no evidence of exploitation.
